FxSound Not Working? 7 Fixes That Actually Help

If FxSound seems to have no effect, won't open, or has stopped working after a Windows update, the cause is usually one of a small number of common issues. Work through these fixes in order — most people resolve their issue within the first three steps.

1. Confirm the correct output device is selected

Open FxSound and check the device dropdown at the top of the window. If you've switched between speakers, headphones, or a monitor's audio output recently, FxSound may still be pointing to the old device. Select the correct one and toggle the power switch off and back on.

2. Toggle the FxSound power switch

The on/off switch inside FxSound does more than mute the effect — it re-establishes the audio processing connection. If sound seems unaffected even with FxSound "on," toggle it off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on.

3. Restart the Windows Audio service

Open the Run dialog with Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Find "Windows Audio" in the list, right-click it, and select Restart. This refreshes the audio pipeline that FxSound relies on, without requiring a full system reboot.

4. Set FxSound's device as the Windows default

In Windows Sound settings, make sure the device you're using is set as both the default output and default communication device. A mismatch here can cause FxSound to process audio for a device that isn't actually playing sound.

5. Update your audio drivers

Outdated audio drivers can conflict with any audio processing software, not just FxSound. Check Device Manager for driver updates under "Sound, video and game controllers," or visit your laptop or sound card manufacturer's support page for the latest driver package.

6. Reinstall using the "Repair" option

Run the FxSound installer again. If it detects an existing installation, it typically offers a Repair option, which reinstalls core components without losing your saved presets. This resolves most issues caused by corrupted files or interrupted updates.

7. Temporarily disable third-party antivirus

Some third-party antivirus suites flag low-level audio processing tools as suspicious. If none of the above steps work, temporarily disable real-time protection in your antivirus software, then relaunch FxSound. If it starts working, add FxSound to your antivirus's exception list rather than leaving protection off permanently.

If you've tried all seven steps and FxSound still isn't working, it may be worth checking whether your specific hardware combination has known issues — searching your device model alongside "FxSound" can often turn up reports from other users with the same setup.
